Design Optimization of Groundwater Quality Management Challenges Using the Outer Approximation Method
نویسنده
چکیده
Impacts to groundwater from anthropogenic sources have resulted in numerous occurrences of subsurface contamination plumes. The management of these plumes has resulted in the expenditure of billions of dollars worldwide. The protection of human health and the environment is the primary emphasis driving plume management. Various methods have been proposed to optimize the response action to the plume management system, including a combination of heuristic and formal optimization algorithms. These algorithms have been successful, albeit very computation intensive or labor intensive. The groundwater quality challenge solution using the outer approximation method is assessed, and appears to equal or outperform both other machine optimization techniques as well as human expert design. At one site alone, a life cycle savings of $72.6M dollars was projected when compared to an existing installed and operating remediation system. This result compares favorably with results from deployment of other optimization techniques on different projects that saved $100M and $90M in life cycle costs.

متن کاملA Two Level Approximation Technique for Structural Optimization
This work presents a method for optimum design of structures, where the design variables can he considered as Continuous or discrete. The variables are chosen as sizing variables as well as coordinates of joints. The main idea is to reduce the number of structural analyses and the overal cost of optimization. In each design cycle, first the structural response quantities such as forces, displac...
متن کاملSustainable Management of Groundwater Resources Using Multi-Criteria Programming (A Case Study of Kashmar Plain)
Frequent droughts and their consequences result in the loss of groundwater, the deficiency of nutrients, the drying of surface water resources, and substantially more exploitation of the groundwater resources, which, altogether, cause the mobilization of saline waters to groundwater tables. This will impair the capacity of the aquifers and the quality of the water. The VIKOR method was applied ...
متن کاملContinuous Discrete Variable Optimization of Structures Using Approximation Methods
Optimum design of structures is achieved while the design variables are continuous and discrete. To reduce the computational work involved in the optimization process, all the functions that are expensive to evaluate, are approximated. To approximate these functions, a semi quadratic function is employed. Only the diagonal terms of the Hessian matrix are used and these elements are estimated fr...
متن کاملIntegration of artificial neural network and geographic information system applications in simulating groundwater quality
Background: Although experiments on water quality are time consuming and expensive, models are often employed as supplement to simulate water quality. Artificial neural network (ANN) is an efficient tool in hydrologic studies, yet it cannot predetermine its results in the forms of maps and geo-referenced data. Methods: In this study, ANN was applied to simulate groundwater quality ...
